(Updated 7/24/2012)
This
research project is in progress. Pages for 19 of the 32 states where Gulen
charter schools have been established or attempted have now been completed.
Click on a
state to learn detailed information about its Gulen charter schools and associated
organizations. On each state’s page the schools are listed in chronological
order of opening or attempt. The enrollment figures for 2010-2011 were obtained
@ NAPCS
Dashboard, and are presumed to be correct.
The total
enrollment of the 126 Gulen charter schools operating in 2010-2011 was
44,727 students. Two of the schools were closed at the end of that school year,
but eleven new schools were opened in 2011-2012. That made the current total count of schools = 135.

WEST REGION
The Accord
Institute for Educational Research oversees schools in these states and
receives a cut of their funding for management services. Students at these
schools have participated in Turkish culture promotional activities sponsored
by the Pacific Institute and/or its related organizations (Anatolian Festival,
Turkish Language Olympics). The leaders of the Pacifica Institute have readily
acknowledged that they are affiliated with the Gulen movement (2008 diplomatic
cable released by WikiLeaks).

The Cosmos

for management services. Cosmos's Harmony-named schools were featured in
"The Global Imam," a New
Republic piece about
Fethullah Gulen by Suzy Hansen (11/10/2010). Hansen wrote, "...almost all
of the Turkish men I met at these schools said they sympathized with or were
followers of Gulen."

MORE ABOUT THE REGIONAL STRUCTURE
Studying
the accelerated expansion of Gulen charter schools over the past few years
reveals the six region structure which is gelling. Image by CASILIPS; click to

A similar
structure was mentioned in a 2011 article about the federal investigation into
these schools. From “U.S. charter-school network with Turkish link draws federal
attention” (Philadelphia Inquirer, 3/20/2011):
...“Further evidence of the ties comes from a disaffected former teacher from Turkey who told federal investigators that the Gulen Movement had divided the United States into five regions, according to knowledgeable sources. A general manager in each coordinates the activities of the schools and related foundations and cultural centers, he told authorities..."
